DO HAIR EXTENSIONS CAUSE DAMAGE TO MY OWN HAIR / SCALP?

Extensions themselves alone will not cause any damage to your hair. However an unqualified stylist may do a bad enough job & could cause damage!

WHAT CAN HAIR EXTENSIONS BE USED FOR?

Hair extensions can be used for the following:
• To add colour / hi-lights, lo-lights
• To add volume to your own hair
• To lengthen your hair
• To lengthen & add volume to your hair
• Used to make hair pieces suitable for hair loss sufferers.

WHERE DO I BUY MY HAIR EXTENSIONS?

Most hair salons order the hair in stock after your initial consultation so you don’t have to worry about going out to find your hair extensions yourself. However, there are some salons which expect you to bring in your own hair. Hair is available to buy from leading hair suppliers, for example the UK’s largest hair showroom is based in London, W3 However, DIY hair extensions can be bought from either hair shops or over the internet (i.e. Pony tails etc)

ARE THERE ANY SALONS NEAR ME THAT SPECIALISE IN HAIR EXTENSIONS?

This is why LoveHairExtensions exists. To help you find a suitable hair extension specialist near you. CLick here to search for your local salon.

WHAT’S BETTER FOR ME, HUMAN HAIR OR SYNTHETIC FIBRE?

Your local salon will advise you as to what type of extension hair they will use throughout your consultation and treatment. (Remember, most salons have been trained on their ‘particular’ system and they will expect you to use the hair type they specialise in.) However, nowadays more experienced hair salons do offer you the choice of either synthetic or human hair. Also synthetic hair, on the whole, is cheaper than human hair and can save up to half the cost of your hair application.

Synthetic hair is usually lighter in weight than human hair strands so people who suffer hair loss might find that synthetic hair maybe the best choice due to its lightness.

WHERE DOES THE HAIR FOR HUMAN HAIR EXTENSIONS COME FROM? (I HEARD IT WAS CUT FROM PRISONERS HEADS!)

Human hair is collected by hair farmers. The largest producing continent is Asia, with India & China being the countries where most of the hair used for human hair extensions actually comes from.

Hair also comes from European (eastern) countries, such as Croatia and surrounding regions. However, authentic European hair is hard to come by as it is scarce and the authenticity of the hair is often doubted. LoveHairExtensions cannot confirm that hair is not cut from prisoners (real European hair) however, we do doubt these claims and Asia does have a lot of villages where a regular way to increase household income is to sell on your hair.

HOW LONG CAN I KEEP MY EXTENSIONS IN FOR?

This also depends on a few things. Are you wearing synthetic hair or human hair? If synthetic, there should be a guide to tell you how to care and maintain the extensions so you get maximum usage from them.

Synthetic hair lasts anywhere from 1 week to 3 months, depending on the quality of the fibre used and the way in which you have worn it.

Human hair should last you at least 3 months. Virgin Hair with all cuticles aligned, should last you at least 1 year. (You will obviously pay a much higher price for this type of hair.)

THE LIFE OF YOUR EXTENSIONS ALSO DEPENDS ON YOUR MAINTENANCE HABITS. IF PROPER CARE INSTRUCTIONS HAVE BEEN FOLLOWED HAIR EXTENSIONS STAY IN THEIR BEST POSSIBLE FORM, RETAINING THEIR APPEARANCE AS WHEN FIRST APPLIED AND INCREASING THEIR LONGEVITY.

CAN I RE-USE THE HAIR?

Most hair, once used, is not re-useable again. If however, you purchased Indian/European virgin remi hair this hair could be removed and then used again. Synthetic hair is often only ever used once.

CAN I CUT THE HAIR EXTENSIONS INTO ANY STYLE?

The stylist will cut and style your extensions to the look desire. Hair extensions can be cut and hairdressers often use thinning scissors and hot razors to create a totally natural look.

CAN I GO SWIMMING?

Hair extensions should be put into a large plait and covered with a swimming cap. Please note that blonde hair can turn green in chlorine.

CAN I USE STRAIGHTENING IRONS OR CURLING TONGS ON EXTENSIONS?

Most synthetic fibres burn under heat, only new age heat resistant fibres can be curled/straightened, i.e. Thermofibre from American Dream. However your stylist will also advise you of this at the time of consultation/application.

Human hair can be straightened and curled as you wish, unless the packet or your stylist advises you NOT to.

DO I WASH IT AS NORMAL?

Human hair can be washed as normal, however your stylist will provide/sell you an aftercare range of products that best suit your particular hair extensions. Some everyday normal shampoos can affect human hair extensions but very mild and low ph shampoos are manufactured especially for hair extensions. Hair extensions should be dried naturally too.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PUT THEM IN?

This all depends on the method of application. For volume allow up to 2 hours but length/volume together can take up to 8 hours. However there are systems which are designed to be quick and effective, i.e. Quick fix systems, where whole heads of longer hair can be completed in under an hour – please note that these methods are used when the client wishes to use the extensions temporarily only. They are not suggested for long term use.

ARE THEY HARD TO LOOK AFTER?

They can be a little tricky at first, just like anything else you are not familiar with. However once you’ve worn them for a few days you will naturally get used to them. Your stylist would have explained to you what you should do with your hair when you sleep, brush, straighten it etc.

MY HAIR IS REALLY FINE/THICK/CURLY, CAN I STILL HAVE EXTENSIONS?

Hair extensions are available in all styles and textures. If your hair is thick and curly you should be able to find something that matches your hair type and if your hair is poker straight you can also find something to blend in.

Hair extensions often undergo chemical processes which make them look and feel the way you first saw/wear them. For instance, sometimes silky soft straight hair is transformed into kinky Afro hair to suit people whose hair type is the same or similar to Afro textured hair.

HUMAN HAIR IS AN UN-ETHICAL WAY OF MAKING MONEY FROM THE POOR

LoveHairExtensions actually do love hair and extensions and do not agree with this point  whatsoever.

I WANT TO LEARN HAIR EXTENSIONS AND WAYS IN WHICH THEY ARE APPLIED, EITHER JUST FOR MY OWN KNOWLEDGE, OR I WORK IN A SALON AND WANT TO EXTEND MY SKILLS

Over the past two years the UK has seen more hair extension academies open up than ever before. Certain companies push their own system on to you, i.e. a certain firm may teach you only one method, which will be the method they sell.

However there are hair extension schools which teach you the whole lot, from micro bonding, down to advanced weaving techniques.

WHAT IF I AM UNHAPPY WITH THE SERVICE I GET FROM MY STYLIST – WHERE DO I COMPLAIN AND HOW?

All the hair salons listed on LHE.com have at least one FULLY qualified hair extension specialist. However, in the odd chance that you are not happy with the service tell the salon immediately. First talk to the person who applied the hair and then if you are still unsatisfied ask to talk to the manager and make an official complaint. It is your right to do so. LHE.com provides a website for the listing of salons who offer hair extensions, but in no way are LHE.com responsible for any matters relating to the management or running of salons. Any problems you may incur with a salon listed on this site are to be dealt directly with the salon concerned and not with LHE.com customer services.

WILL YOU NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MY OWN HAIR AND THE EXTENSIONS?

The hair extensions will be matched up to your own hair type and providing that a qualified technician applies them professionally you can never tell that you are wearing extensions. There should be no bumps or kinks, which make some hair extension applications look very noticeable.

HOW LONG DOES MY EXISTING HAIR NEED TO BE?

For the best results your existing hair should be at least 2.5 to 3 inches (6 to 7.5 centimeters) long. This is an estimate only and your hair stylist will advise you of this when you have your initial consultation. It will all depend on what system the stylist is using and how experienced they are.

WHAT IF I DON’T LIKE THEM?

This isn’t un-heard of but is quite a rare occurrence. If you do not like them, and you are sure that you want them removed, just let your stylist know and they will take it from there. However, you would have to pay for the service and the hair so make sure you are certain you want them removed.

CAN HAIR EXTENSIONS BE DYED/COLORED?

Human hair can be dyed (unless stated otherwise). LoveHairExtensions recommend you get the hair colored at a specialist salon. VIRGIN hair is the best human hair you can dye as it has never undergone any prior processes whereas pre-processed extensions may break the hair as it is already weak.

CAN I APPLY THE EXTENSIONS MYSELF IN THE COMFORT OF MY OWN HOME?

LoveHairExtensions recommend that the only type of extensions you should attempt to apply at home are attachments only, such as ponytails, clip-on wefts and quick fix solutions. These are relatively easy to do by yourself or with the help of a friend.
We do NOT recommend that you apply hair extensions, i.e. micro bonding etc, on your own.
